MIKA COTTON EXHIBITION

Hei tiki have always fascinated me, even from my childhood. Their forms and symbolism have captivated my imagination throughout the years. It is this fascination that I wanted to explore further. The tiki form, to me, represent the ancestors and the space they inhabited. They are the bridge between the past and present, connecting us to our roots. Their distinct shapes and intricate lines became the primary source of inspiration for my paintings.

I approached the illustration of tiki in a unique and untraditional manner. Rather than adhering to classic representations, I sought to infuse my own interpretation into their forms. Within my compositions, the tiki take on a central role, serving as anchors, conveying the energy and dynamism of their own world they exist in. I was deeply inspired by the story, The Conquest of Taiamai, as documented in the book "Ngā Pūriri o Taiamai." It held importance for me to not only personally understand the history that unfolded in the Bay of Islands but also to share it with others. I explored this historical event throughout the making of these works, capturing the essence of warfare and battle through movement, camaraderie, running, and explosive nature.

However, the figures themselves hold their own presence and narrative outside of this. Each painting serves as a snapshot, freezing a moment in the tikis' journey. They occupy a space of their own, floating through the vastness of time and inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the narrative. Through my art, I hope to ignite a curiosity in others, encouraging them to explore and appreciate the history and traditions that have shaped our world. It is a tribute to the conquest of Taiamai, tikis, and a celebration of the enduring spirit of Ngā Puhi and Ngāti Rangi
